“Free media is the very cornerstone of any democracy, which is why it is important that we maintain our support for Ukrainian media and independent journalism. UMF Nordic strengthens our Nordic collaboration and provides a solid foundation for continued efforts,” says Randi S. Øgrey, board member of UMFN and CEO of the Norwegian Media Businesses’ Association.

The Ukrainian Media Fund (UMF) has in 2025 been transferred from the German Marshall Fund to the Nordic region. This ensures closer collaboration between Nordic media organisations and Ukrainian media partners.

Since the establishment of the Ukrainian Media Fund in March 2022, the fund has played a crucial role in supporting free media and independent journalism in Ukraine. The fund, which was founded by media companies from the Nordic countries and Poland, has been in partnership with the German Marshall Fund since July 2023.

The new Nordic-based operation strengthens direct collaboration with Ukrainian partners, while at the same time reducing administrative costs. This streamlines the delivery of resources such as equipment, salaries, and training — vital and necessary support for Ukrainian media.
