In the third quarter of 2025, the Ukrainian Media Fund Nordic (UMFN) successfully distributed €150,000 to independent Ukrainian media outlets. This initiative marked the second disbursement this year, reinforcing the Fund’s commitment to sustaining free and independent journalism in Ukraine during a time of unprecedented challenges.

The funding was distributed to media outlets across numerous regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk, Cherkasy, and Poltava. In total, over 50 outlets received support. The grant process is based on qualified input from three key UMFN partners: the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Media Business Association. The UMFN extends its sincere gratitude to these organizations for their unwavering commitment and active engagement in ensuring long-term sustainability of independent Ukrainian media.

Looking ahead, UMFN plans three rounds of funding for independent Ukrainian media next year. This will help outlets keep producing quality journalism, report on the war, and protect freedom of expression. The situation in Ukraine remains critical, and supporting a free press is more important than ever to ensure access to reliable information and uphold democratic values.

“Truth is the first casualty of war, and in Ukraine it is under attack. That is why free media and independent journalism are more important than ever,” says Randi Øgrey, Chair of UMFN. “We are grateful for all the support we have received for UMF, but the situation remains critical. We urge everyone to stand with Ukraine and help ensure credible information by supporting free media.”
